On Falling off Bikes and Falling in Love

by misslampa

(Teenybopper post coming your way…don’t say I didn’t warn you!)

On the way home from work, my good friend Carlos was proudly sharing that he took off the balancers of his son’s bike that day and, to his surprise (and relief), Diego zoomed forward right there and then and skipped the entire phase of working up the courage to try again after falling off his bike and getting his knees scraped.

Then I smiled that sad smile and said I missed it, too, because I never learned how to ride a bike when I was a kid – even if I had a red bike of my own then.

“Why? What happened?”

“The bike had balancers, and when I tried to take them off—”

“And biked, I kept wobbling.”

“So I stopped trying to learn. Because I was afraid to fall.”

Then Carlos momentarily paused (for dramatic effect, I suppose – you know how teenybopper flicks are) and softly said something that would play in my head for the next seven days.

“And even up to now, you’re still afraid to fall.”

To be honest, the thought lingers still, and I am expecting that it’ll linger some more. But for my own sanity, I hope to prove Carlos wrong really soon, before all this turns into a raw, real, but nevertheless depressing art film.

Unless it makes the Cannes, of course. Then they can keep me from putting my heart in someone else’s hands until the end credits roll and (I think) I won’t mind at all.
